Allow other BPMN-swimlane options
Beantwoord- What is your wish?
The BPMN standard does not require swimminglanes in pools to be connected to a business actor. Allow to add a swimming lane that is described by:
- Free text
- A link to another object such as...
- application component
- a business function
BPMN standard: "Lanes are used to organize and categorize Activities within a Pool. The meaning of the Lanes is up to the modeler. BPMN does not specify the usage of Lanes. Lanes are often used for such things as internal roles (e.g., Manager, Associate), systems (e.g., an enterprise application), an internal department (e.g., shipping, finance), etc. In addition, Lanes can be nested (see Figure 10.125) or defined in a matrix. "
- Why do you want this wish?
To be able to easily model swimlanes where:
- no hard connection is needed with an actor
- a combination of possible actors can perform the task
- if the tasks are performed by one application component
- Do you have a workaround? And if so, what is it?
Ugly: create combined business actors "Secretary OR manager", create business actors that are in reality application components
- How would you ideally solve the problem?
When adding a lane, option:
- Free text
- Link to.... Business actor, Application Component, Business function
(And in the process portal you need to think about the filtering)
- How big is the wish on a scale from 1 to 5? (1 = it would be nice, but definitely not necessary, and 5 = I cannot work another day without it).

This is already an existing wish on our wishlist, so I am going to add yours to it! I cannot give any time details about this one, but I will update the community when I have more information to share.

Thanks. Where can I find this wishlist?

This wishlist is not accessible, it's a list our product owner and UX-team are working with.

Roeland Loggen isn't a swimming lane always someone or -thing that performs a task.
I sometimes create an "automation" actor to use in BPMN. A task in the lanes (the task linked to an application) means it is an automated task. And i re-use this lane in more than 1 BPMN view so i don't have to create "application actors".

True Rob Korving - but that doesn't help us in the fact that we want to have insight in the processes where some application component is performing some tasks in the process. "Automation" doesn't fit the "Business Actor" role or "Role" as defined by our architects (or Archimate for that matter). This way we wouldn't have the aforementioned insight. Moreover, how do I specify what application component performs the task.
Your solution doesn't conform to our process rules. A task linked to an application doesn't mean it is automated, it could also specify that a certain Business Actor (or Role) performs the task WITH the linked app.component. Yes, we could make the task a Service Task, but this still leaves the fact that we need a "fake" role for the swimming lane. This holds even more when users/people and different app.component perform different tasks throught the process.
In the end it boils down to the fact Roeland adresses, BPMN doesn't state that we have to use Business Actors as role for a swimming lane, so please do not make it as such. Or at least have the option for a customer's admin to specify what object types can be used for a swimming lane denotation.
Thanks.

Upvoted because ticket #22845 told me to.

Hi all,
Free text using annotations is possible in the Alpha version of the new BPMN that is currently being tested by a selected group of customers.
Allowing more options for the swim lanes such as business actors in on the roadmap and we will update when that becomes available in the new BPMN.
Thank you,
Team ValueBlue
