The 2nd option. Any view is a potential template. Once they're linked to the new Archimate, BPMN, Logical Data option the promotion to a template is done.

The B/C suggested workaround by Martijn is workable. Yet, it would be nicer to have at least some association relationship between objects and free shapes. 

We do miss this possibility as well. Please make it available on short notice. Just supporting SVG-images would do for the short term.
